Farmers Alliance for Restoration - East Africa

We've developed the curriculum and the delivery model and have the evidence to back it up - now we're ready to roll it out...

We're now ready to move on from the permEzone pilot programme by creating a new organization called ‘The Farmers Alliance for Restoration’.  F.A.R. will act as the umbrella organization, identifying permaculture training centers that can deliver the programme, maintaining systems for program integrity and continuing development, creating and developing funding models, and developing further services and resources to facilitate the continuing growth of healthy, economically and ecologically resilient farming communities.

The idea of creating an ‘Alliance’, rests on the hope that the organizations that engage in the program – either as training and support centers, or as farming communities of practice – will be members of the alliance with direct influence over policy and governance to further embed community ownership of the process. Other resources and partnerships will be developed around the world to provide practical support – not least funding – for the regional alliances. For example, a US-based F.A.R.  organization could offer a membership model for supporters, in ways that encourage full engagement with regenerative food systems, supporting the goals of the programme through practical action locally as well as financial contributions globally.

Mission...

F.A.R. creates opportunities and resources for farming communities to engage in a process of self-empowerment to revitalize their local environments and economies. They can restore ecosystems and social systems to achieve eco-social resilience, by:-
  • Adopting permaculture design principles and agroecology to achieve the potential abundance of healthy farming systems designed to work with nature in mind;
  • Normalizing ideas of citizen science and shared experimentation to explore locally-appropriate farming solutions;
  • Forming cooperatives and working in collaboration to improve local resources, meet local needs, and interact more effectively with the wider economy.

Create and sustain a membership-based non-profit organization that builds communities of practice at the local and regional levels.
Build channels of communication and knowledge sharing for continuing development and economic empowerment.
Participate in a new economy of regenerative farming practices that puts the farmers in control of the supply chain, and brings sustainable funding for the continuation of this programme.
Keep ownership of the programme local by making membership available to: -
  • farming community cooperatives which have emerged from the full two-year programme, and are continuing to work together in communities of practice to develop eco-social resilience, and
  • permaculture training centers that are actively engaged in delivering the F.A.R. programme of training and support.
